What is a roto molded cooler?
A roto molded cooler, short for rotationally molded cooler, is a type of cooler that is constructed using a specialized manufacturing process called rotational molding. This process involves adding plastic material to a mold, which is then rotated in various directions as it’s heated. This causes the plastic to evenly coat the interior of the mold, creating a seamless and durable construction with consistent thickness throughout.
Roto molded coolers are known for their exceptional durability and insulation capabilities. The seamless design and thick walls make them more resistant to wear and tear, allowing them to withstand rough handling and challenging outdoor conditions. This durability makes them ideal for activities like camping, fishing, hunting, and outdoor adventures where ruggedness is essential.
One of the main advantages of roto molded coolers is their superior ice retention. The thick walls and high-quality insulation help keep the interior temperature low, allowing the cooler to maintain ice for an extended period. This makes them popular choices for situations where keeping items cold, such as food, beverages, or even perishable goods, is crucial.
Due to their construction and insulation properties, roto molded coolers are often favored by outdoor enthusiasts who require reliable and long-lasting cooling solutions.
How long do the coolers hold ice?
The ice retention duration of roto molded coolers can vary depending on factors such as the cooler’s size, insulation quality, outside temperature, and how often the cooler is opened. On average, high-quality roto molded coolers can keep ice frozen for around 5 to 7 days. Some models might even extend this to 7-10 days or more under optimal conditions.
It’s important to note that while roto molded coolers offer exceptional ice retention compared to regular coolers, real-world performance can be influenced by several variables. Opening the cooler frequently, exposing it to high temperatures, and improper packing can all affect how long the ice lasts.
For full tips and tricks to keeping your cooler cold longer, see our ice retention guide.
How do I clean my cooler?
Cleaning a roto molded cooler is a straightforward process. Make sure the cooler is completely empty, removing any leftover food, beverages, or ice. Rinse off the interior and exterior with water and use mild dish soap or cooler-specific cleaner to wash all surfaces. A soft brush or sponge can be used but avoid abrasive brushes that could damage the cooler. Pay special attention to rubber seals, gaskets, and drainage plugs that may accumulate dirt or grime over time. Rinse thoroughly, drain, and dry before storage.
For more detailed instructions and tips, see our cooler cleaning guide.
Can I use dry ice in my cooler?
Yes, you can use dry ice in the hard side cooler. Our hard coolers are known for their robust construction and excellent insulation properties, making them suitable for holding dry ice. However, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind when using dry ice in a cooler:
1. Ventilation: Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas as it sublimates (converts from solid to gas). Ensure that the cooler is well-ventilated to allow the gas to escape. Do not completely seal the cooler, as excessive gas buildup can cause pressure to build up inside.
2. Insulation: While our hard coolers are well-insulated, dry ice is extremely cold and can cause the cooler’s temperature to drop significantly. Use extra caution when handling the cooler to avoid frostbite or freezing items inside.
3. Layering: Place a layer of regular ice or a towel between the dry ice and the items you want to keep cold. This helps prevent direct contact, which could potentially freeze and damage delicate items.
4. Safety Precautions: Dry ice should not be handled with bare hands. Use gloves or tongs when handling dry ice to avoid skin contact and burns.
5. Monitoring: Regularly check the interior temperature of the cooler to ensure it doesn’t drop to unsafe levels. Dry ice can keep items extremely cold, so monitor perishable items to prevent freezing.
6. Usage Time: Dry ice has a shorter lifespan compared to regular ice, as it sublimates faster. Plan your usage and timing accordingly.
7. Packaging: If you’re transporting or shipping items with dry ice, be aware of regulations and guidelines for packaging and labeling hazardous materials.
How do I clean my tumbler?
